Many small business owners ask this question all the time – do I need to have a Facebook page for my business? If I do, how do I create one? The good news is creating a Facebook page is easy and free. The bad news? It takes efforts to make it work for your business.
To help small business owners like you to have a good start in the Facebook marketing world, I compile a list of things that you should know. Facebook is now a very crowded space. It isn’t easy to stand out. But you are a business owner! You’ve done a zillion things successfully. It shouldn’t be too hard for you. Remember – you are awesome.
1) Creating a Facebook page is free and easy
You visit http://www.facebook.com and create one! If you don’t have a Facebook account, you will have to create one first. Hootsuite explains How to create a Facebook page for business in a step by step to help you.
2) Optimise and size the cover photo
You have to ensure that the image you use is recognisable to your audience. You should use a company’s brand or your headshot if you are a freelancer. Being recognizable is critical to getting found and liked, especially in Facebook Search and it’s what shows up in search results, and is placed at the top of your Facebook Page.
When choosing a photo, keep in mind that Facebook frequently changes its picture dimensions. Currently, page profile pictures display at 170×170 pixels on desktop, and 128×128 pixels on smartphones.
3) Add a Call to Action Button
These are things like “Watch Video,” “Sign Up,” or “Book Now” — and each can be customized with a destination URL or piece of content of your choosing. This is a great way to drive more traffic to your website, or to get customers to take a desired action.
4) Fill out all of your company’s information
On the top of your business page, you click on the 3 dots icon and select “Edit Page Info”. This is the place that you provide all information about your business as much as possible. It helps build credibility and also help customers to reach out to you if they are interested in your product.
5) Tell your story under About [Your Company’s Name]
This section was introduced by Facebook last year. It is a space on the right column that you can tell customers the background of your company. You should be creative in using this space to tell people about your story.
6) Regularly post engaging content
This is the most challenging task to have a successful Facebook business page. You should post regularly and consistently. It normally takes some time until you get good traction. You will have to invest in creating helpful and attractive content in forms of photos, videos, or blog posts.
If you find it difficult to mix up your content and engage your audience, you can always start with the 70-20-10 habit:
- publish original material 70 percent of the time
- post content relevant to the interest of your audience 20 percent of the time
- Create self-promotional content only 10 percent of the time
How often should you post? I suggest at least 3 times a week.
Having a Facebook page could help your business grows. However, it requires a commitment to generate and post engaging content consistently. If you want to benefit from using the Facebook advertising platform, there is no doubt that you will need a Facebook page. And, in my opinion, Facebook has the best ad targeting platform – even better than Google. So, you don’t want to miss it.
