Did you celebrate the World Emoji Day?

I missed it. I didn’t even know it is a thing – the World Emoji Day. It was yesterday. And every year, a number of guessing games flood social media on the occasion of World Emoji Day. This unofficial holiday has been observed every year since 2014 and has been deemed a “global celebration of emojis” – the ideograms and smileys that help inject some expression into online text conversations. World Emoji Day was founded by Jeremy Burge, the creator of Emojipedia, which is an unofficial Wikipedia for emojis.ย

Onย World Emoji Day 2020, several brands have shared guessing games on social media. The rules are very simple – look at the emojis and try to guess what they represent.ย

Are you a movie fan? Do you know the answers of these movies?

What are the most used emojis?

Can you describe your day with emojis?

And, can you decode these dishes?

We all use emojis. Here is the story of emojis. By the way, Apple didn’t invent emojis.

In 1999, a Japanese artist created the first emoji, but it wasnโ€™t until 2010 that the IT standard Unicodeย acceptedย the first cohort of 625 emojis. The next year, emoji keyboards were batched into the iOS update.

<3 became โค๏ธ and ยฏ\_(ใƒ„)_/ยฏ becameโ€”well, we actually didnโ€™t get an emoji for that until 2016.ย

Unicode crowdsources emoji requests (really, you can submit your own rightย here), so the language has evolved to reflect broader changes in society.ย

In 2007, a team at Google requested that the Unicode Consortium recognize and create universal standards around emojis to unify the pictograms cross-platform.

In 2008, Apple released an emoji keyboard to Japanese market with iOS 2.2. One year later, two engineers at Apple (Yasuo Kida, Peter Edberg) proposed the addition of 608 new emojis into the Unicode Standard.ย

In 2015:ย Users were allowed to choose fromย five shadesย of skin tones in addition to the existing, very natural-looking yellow.ย

In April 2020,ย the most popular emojis on Twitter were as follows.

  1. Face with Tears of Joy ๐Ÿ˜‚
  2. Loudly Crying Face ๐Ÿ˜ญ
  3. Pleading Face ๐Ÿฅบ
  4. Rolling On the Floor Laughing ๐Ÿคฃ
  5. Red Heart โค๏ธ
  6. Sparkles โœจ
  7. Smiling Face with Heart Eyes ๐Ÿ˜
  8. Folded Hands ๐Ÿ™
  9. Smiling Face with Smiling Eyes ๐Ÿ˜Š
  10. Smiling Face with Hearts ๐Ÿฅฐ

Happy Emoji Day everyone! #WorldEmojiDay2020 #WorldEmojiDay
